My laptop has become unreliable sadly (its had many problems, heat damage, possible RAM failure, somebody dropped it, MOBO needed to be replaced, etc), and I am running Ubuntu on it so it really is a pain to game (WINE/Cedega aside).

So I am probably going to get the below system, built and configured for me (Even if I could build it myself, this has a warranty on it and is professionally built):

22" Hanns G HDMI monitor
Pixxo Wired Keyboard and mouse
Rosewill Black Steel ATX mid tower Case
585watt Hec XPOWER Power supply
AMD AM3 Regor 2.8ghz dual core processor 2x1mb L2 Cache (OC'ed to 3.2)
4gb of ddr3 1333mhz ram
ASROCK 770 DE Motherboard dual PCIE lanes
gigabyte 4670 graphics card with 1gb gddr3 750 MHz core 320 stream processors
500gb western digital caviar blue Sata hard drive
samsung 24x DVD/cd burner
rosewill wireless n adapter
windows 7 professional 64 bit

It may not be "the best" but it will sure as hell do what I want. Should be able to max out Fallout 3 and run Crysis on Medium (possibly high). I would not even be getting a pc to game except I have invested over $300 in the last year alone in games before my laptop went screwy (even then it could not run most of my games).

Everything comes out to $750 with the warranty and support whenever. I am not a complete computer idiot but it's nice to know I don't have to stress about it.

Main use is school stuff but I mean... ya, it will be used for games. Should be able to run Maya/3dsmax without much trouble if I am just modeling and c++ work won't be a problem either.

Very excited :)

Edit: btw, I did do the pricing and the parts without Windows come out to a little over $710. This includes a retail copy of 7 pro and that plus the warranty, the fact that I will be able to use it before I buy, and the fact that I know none of the parts will be lemons are worth the extra $40

That's awesome. I want to buy a new computer within the next year or so. I hope your new system gives you some good play hours.

Windows 7 Professional? Excellent choice, my friend. And the build sounds good.

I got an Asus personal gaming laptop for Christmas. I think it kicks ass.

My computer is about 7-8 years old and struggles to play things even 5 years old. Once Starcraft 2 is out (or enough information is available) I'll take the recommended specs to my local computer store and have them build something that will play it perfectly, plus slightly more. Then I can play at least one new game plus the last five years of games. That's always the problem with PC games, you can't easily keep up.

I wouldn't trust Rosewill if I were you. I've had 2 mice and a wifi card from them, all died within a month of their purchase. Also Windows 7 home premium should suffice, unless there's actually a feature you'll use in pro, but you can still find an application for free that will do the same most likely. This would mean you would have an extra $35 to spend on other things such as a video card. That will give you enough that you can get a 4770. What purpose do you have for Windows 7 Professional?

Computer cases have a low failure rate (even if it is Rosewill)
I too am building a gaming computer, but I won't have the funds needed until March
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4Ghz
4gigs of DDR3 ram
ASUS M4A78T-E
Corsair 950tx
And I'll decide on the video card when I have the funds
(Computer case and hard drives are already purchased)

Not just the case is Rosewill. The power supply is a bit excessive, unless you plan on adding some monster upgrades later.

Nice choice on the monitor though, I have a 17" from Hanns G, has worked for a year and a half, no dead pixels. Runs at 1440x900.

The price might be slashed by using the 2.8ghz processor, and overclocking, unless you already plan to overclock that beyond 3.4ghz.

There isn't much info on the motherboard side.. That's where it could all fall apart. I looked my own board up and found ASUS could gain an extra FPS, but the gain was minimal in comparison. The choice of cooler can affect the performance as well. Along with the case, directing airflow and keeping all cables tidy to increase the airflow from the front to the top rear.

I myself have 800w PSU. But, I see myself getting a performance model at some point.

There isn't much performance increase on DDR3 memory at the moment, and the regor I would presume to be the core name.

You say you have a DVD/CD-Burner. I take it you can only write and re-write to CD's only?

I assume the "Gigabyte" graphics card is one from ATI, now a sub company from AMD? I hope it's on a respectable chipset as I say can make or break a system. I choose carefully on my own systems where performance is an issue along with features that I can use on it. I probably spend 100x longer researching the perfect board. because someone has no problem with one board on their set up doesn't mean it will be perfect for nearly anything you plug into it.

Either way, I hope it does what you want from it

Thanks all for the replies.

The system is being built for me by a local company that does this type of thing.

http://www.sentrynetworking.com/

I priced it and if I ordered the parts (all got good reviews) it would be about $720ish with no OS. This is $30 more but I get the OS, 24/7 tech support, peace of mind with the warranty, and the parts are all tested working. Anything goes wrong its free replacement.

I could use Premium... except this comes with Pro for nothing extra (Premium not even offered). I need it for gaming, some coding stuff, and a few school things. My laptop already runs linux so it will be nice to have a Windows rig as well.

I have abunch of games I already own that I cannot play right now (FO3, Crysis, DA:O, etc) that I am looking forward to with this :)
