Is it possible to save iTunes files onto a flash drive or burn them to a CD, rather than save them to a hard drive?

Yeah, with a flash drive connect it to your USB port then it should pop up. Go to my documents and Copy/paste the files onto your flash drive.

A CD you would have to do a data disc which I have only done once or twice so I don't really remember it. I will try it tonight.

Apparently, in Windows / Mac, the Digital Rights Management prevents simple copying. I am speaking from a position of almost total ignorance - I know that some copying is okay, but sometimes DRM kicks in and an operation is not permitted.

In Linux, using the default applications, DRM does not seem to be an issue. You could even boot Linux from CD (without installing to your system) and manage your music collection.

You should be able to put them on a flashdrive. You might even be able to email the files to yourself (a friend emailed me songs before) and transfer them to either the hardrive or a flashdrive that way. I've got a Mac/Safari as well & the files I got via a friend were from a Windows system.

If the music files are normal MP3s, then yes, it's easy, just drag and drop to a flash drive or make a burnable playlist and burn it to a blank CD.

If it's music you got from the iTunes Store before 2009, it'll probably be DRM'd. This will not affect burning it to a CD, or playing it from that CD, or copying it anywhere really, but you may have trouble playing it on other computers or devices from a flash drive. The DRM can be cracked, but that's not something I can discuss here.

That would also depend on when you bought the music on iTunes (if that is how you get your music). If you bought your music within the last year or two, they would not have any DRM on them.

I bought all my files after October 2009.

For usb drives: right click file in iTunes > show in Finder, that's the location of your files.
For CD burning: use the above. Or in iTunes: create a playlist and drop files there, then right click playlist name > send to CD
