I think a colonist would be cool. A science vessel would also be nice, they would probably be the first to do the initial exploring.

A scientific vessel would be good. I wouldn't fancy being on board an industrial ship especially one named the Nostromo.

For about three months I had the same re occuring dream/day dream. Somehow my consciousness had been co-opted into helping run a sentient computer controlling a deep space vessel. For the first three minutes this was fantastic. The it got really boring because we weren't traveling that fast and the stars didn't "change" for weeks and there was nothing else to do except minor guidance and drills like checking all the internal doors opened and closed etc. It was totally empty, and there were no panels of controls or anything. One unifrorm, graphite grey throughout. Three shades lighter than what you could see outside of a tiny optical port . There were no gunnery stations and nothing vaguely like you see in the films. It was totally silent and the doors don't swish.

The main sentient computer never even communicated with me at all.

Fortunately I found a new obsession.

Deep space is a drag. Don't go there unless you are in a cyrogenic coma.

Well... the Nostromo wouldn't have been so bad if Wal-Mart *cough* Weyland-Yutani wasn't the company in control of the mining operation. I think GameSpot would do better.

None of the above, thanks. I'll settle for a single-person exploration ship, with no particular end other than "see what's out there."

Nostromo

I've read that book, it was terribly dull. Silver smuggling or somesuch, and not a displacer beast in sight.

Science vessel. The perfect ship for discovering the mysteries of the Universe. Also less dangerous to being in, that military or pirate vessels.

Forget that, I'm staying on my home planet. No way do I want to go out into the massive empty abyss of death that is space.

How sad - I'm the first to opt for "medical". Has no one read "Prostho Plus"?

And... I really must dig out. and re-read, the "Sector General" books. Image

Space is a bit boring really... it has no atmosphere.

I would prefer to be the spaceship.

Think about the concept of transferring your mind into a cyborg body, but replace the humanoid body with a starship, and include smaller drone bodies that you can upload into.

Also I would prefer to have distributed back-up's for my awareness.

I wouldn't want to drag this organic meatsack into space, that is foolish.

Actually, space does not have to be boring. If you travel close enough to the speed of light, Einstein is your friend.
Just dont expect the people you leave behind to be waiting for you on your return.
