The title says it all, I am gonna put a poll, but Im not sure on the brands other than Intel/AMD. I remember cyrix back in the day though, and the apple CPUs, not sure on the names of them though.

This better not turn into a flame war on which CPU is better. Feel free to discuss specs as well.

I wouldnt mind an explanation as to why you prefer that brand to the other. I will say my preference then I guess.

Pref: AMD
Why: Ive had really good experiences with their CPUs in the past, they tend to be very stable when OCing, and they tend have a good cost to performance ratio. They tend to also have higher bus speeds (well, back in the day when I went to school they did, not so sure about it nowadays, they seems even now.)

Intel and AMD are the only real brands left. PowerPC were the Apple chips, but those types of processors are only used in game consoles nowadays.

I don't think there tends to be a huge difference between AMD and Intel anymore. They're both fundamentally the x86 architecture (or x86-64 for the newer 64-bit processors) so it comes down to whichever is the better deal when you go to buy it.

ARM

(There are an unholy frakload of ARM chips out there, being as they're in nearly every mobile phone. Probably more ARM chips than there are Intel or AMD ones put together. )

OK, but ARM chips aren't in a whole lot of PCs. (Are they in some netbook-type things?)

I don't care. I happen to use an Intel core 2 duo because that's what my computer came with. I don't know much about hardware specifics, so anything that works and is reasonably fast is good enough for me.

My current computer has an AMD Phenom II X2 550 Dual-Core Black Edition 3.1GHz
I have never used any Intel processors in any of my home PC's

ARM chips.... they are the processers in the gameboys/Nintendo DS if I remember correctly.

THose netbooks tend to use specially made CPUs, like the Intel Atom.

There's one in the iPad, and in my iPhone.

It's Intel for me, I've heard bad things about AMD, and Intel is more the standard nowadays.

I'm still looking for an nForce 700 series motherboard with AM3 socket, DDR3 memory, and dual gigabit ethernet ports. I prefer nForce anyway. The closest I can find only has DDR2 memory from ASUS with one gigabit ethernet port...

Personally I avoid Gigabyte, had nothing but bad luck with those boards

Parallax. Has 8 cores and can be programmed in one day to actually do something,
or ANYTHING. Runs on 3 volts and can play video games or be a robot brain and
needs no slow OS. Can talk and sing and without a video card use up to 8 TV
or VGA screens and only costs $8 if you have electronic tools and stuff already.
Can be programmed to be programmed in BASIC like old 8-bit computers,
and connect to keyboard and mouse and speakers and all kinds of other stuff.

While I prefer Intel, I cant really say that one is better than the other. Not too long ago I would have said avoid AMD because every AMD system I've seen at that point had issues, but nowadays it doesn't matter unless you're a laptop user. From that standpoint, AMD processors don't seem to last as long on the battery, so Intel has a slight advantage.

I've got an Apple PowerBook featuring a PowerPC (G4) and an Apple iBook featuring a PowerPC (G4).

So I don't vote for either of the two listed above :P

I've always used intel up until this point, but next time I will try an AMD. I'm CPU agnostic.

They were designed and initially used as desktop CPUs; I still have a couple of ARM desktop machines (and an excellent Windows emulator which renders them unnecessary!) The irony is that while Acorn was crushed by Wintel, their CPU architecture went on to be absolutely ubiquitous. And yeah, there are some ARM netbooks in the works.
