I have an idea for an RPG that I'm pondering about trying to make. I know very little about programming, and I'm aware that learning something completely new takes a long time and much effort. Could an isometric 2D RPG even be made realistically by one guy? I know how to make art assets and I know how to write a story.

I'd need to learn how to program it and I have little idea where to start. I've seen it said that it takes something like ten years to learn how to program effectively.

Thoughts?

There's a program out there called RPG maker, you might take a look. It might not do everything you want.

Single person developed games are not unheard of, especially for simpler game designs. Practice makes perfect. Good luck!

The program called RPG Maker that Moog mentioned I hear is good. There are also
other things available to you.. Microsoft has the XNA developement framework. And alot of the tools
are free. But it cost you to publish your games.

Programming isn't hard, if you love it. Myself I am trying to learn more about game programming myself.
My dream is to one day design things that help regressive autistic people to communicate better with their
world.

I am new here so I can post links yet but do a google on Rpg maker and XNA , those might help you..

Wish you the best in writing your RPG Hal..

It doesn't take ten years to program effectively. I guess it depends on how much time you put in and your natural aptitude - maybe a couple of years. I've been programming in various languages for thirty years now. You build up a huge stock of code and techniques in your head and can design and write clean code very quickly. Simple games I can knock up in a day or less, for example I recently wrote a crossword generator for inclusion in another program to create various size crosswords with clues and player interface using a pool of 1/4 million words. There is more to any game than you may initially think. You have got to be 100% clear on the logic of the game play before you start coding.

Thanks for the replies. I've started fooling around with Python for now. Lots of sites seemed to suggest it, as it was one of the easier languages for a beginner. There's something strangely addictive about it all, even though I've done nothing more than make it act like a calculator with the help of a tutorial. Fun, fun, fun.
