Does anyone notice with Windows 7 that it's periodically refreshing the desktop icons? It's strange because it will happen and I didn't even manipulate anything on the desktop. It doesn't inhibit functionality it's just different.

Microsoft have perhaps just set it to update periodically based on a timer. Vista used to lose the plot sometimes and not keep up to date with the desktop icons, especially if devices were being plugged in and out. In fact icon management on Vista was pretty crappy anyway - I've often changed the icon of a program and it refuses to show the updated icon even if the screen was refreshed - Windows seems to cache them and not update the cache when necessary. It has often taken a reboot for Vista to notice a changed icon.

Not really, I have never noticed because I'm hardly on my sister's laptop (running Windows7) so I wouldn't be too sure there.

It doesn't.

You sure some program running in the background isn't doing it?

Don't know if it's related, but I've had trouble with desktop gadgets disappearing and not coming back (even if I tried refreshing).

I found a work around by logging off and logging back in. I presume it's some error that happens once in a while when it's logging in.

Not sure if it's what you are experiencing. I've seen desktop flicker on a friend's computer with Intel IGP. It only happens when some program is drawing heavily to the screen. In his case, it seems to be a hardware/driver issue.
