If so, why and how do you like it?

I've preordered a 3G model for myself, since I carry a backpack with my digital camera in it everywhere already, and I don't yet have a smart phone. With my current plan, it's cheaper in the long run to keep the cell phone I have for $25 a month with unlimited texts and get the 3G iPad with the $15/month service.

I saw a man the other day with an iPad. He drove over 200 miles just to buy one on opening day. I use Apple products myself, but won't buy an iPad until I can see how the technology gets used.

My mom wants one because she has simple computer needs. Apart from work, she only uses a computer to check e-mail and online research. She wants to get rid of her laptop if she buys an iPad. Could the iPad start replacing laptops?

I highly doubt it—imagine what a pain it is to type on those things. The iPad is too big and bulky to be like an iPhone, iPod, or other portable device, but not big enough that they were able to give it a real keyboard and other useful bits.

It's an over sized Ipod touch. I have an Ipod touch and I can only imagine how filthy the Ipad will be after a few browsing/gaming sessions. Plus who has the money for such luxuries. It's not essential. I suggest buying an iphone or an ipod touch. way smaller. Or buy a laptop.

Agree. In spite of their reputation for reliability, everything Apple makes is ridiculously overpriced. The demos I've seen for the iPad are interesting (particularly the book-reading app), but the cheapest one starts at $500, and it comes with nothing - you have to buy literally everything else as a separate accessory, so by the time you've got all the basics, you're talking $1000, and for my budget, that's only slightly more affordable than a trip on the space shuttle. I'd rather wait and see whether it's even going to take off and if it does, other companies will start cloning less expensive versions.

But frankly, I hate touch screens. I've used them before in the workplace and they were constantly covered in greasy fingerprints. Those also became maladjusted and had to be recalibrated every day, because of the crappy way people manhandle equipment that they didn't have to pay for.

It would be kinda pointless getting a iPad, it does exactly everything like the iPod touch does, but in some ways, its better like if yo want to watch YouTube videos and that but I wouldn't be exactly sure if you can watch it in good quality.

However you can STILL play games and apps like you would normally do on the iPhone/iPod Touch, but wouldn't it be a little weird beause some games you have to shaking the iphone, that be pretty scary watching somebody do that with the iPad.

Good deal I suppose?

Yes, it'll be great for her. Excellent screen res and size,, portability, price, browsing, etc.

To the greasy guy: iPhone 3GS and this have oleophobic screens.

No, I've never bought anything from Apple, not because of any dislike for their products but because they all seem overpriced and not all that useful. This iPad seems to hit a new record in uselessness. I'm happy with my laptop, even if it does have a broken "c" key.

As do I, they just arent useful for doing many things, they aren't precise enough and seem more like a gimmick.

It's a failure. I will never use one of those or anything made by Apple. I'd rather choose a Nokia N810 instead.

They look very cool, but I wonder about typing on them. Seems like something simple enough my Mom could use it, though.

I played with one the other day and tried out the typing. It was surprisingly easy. I thought it'd be awkward on the touch screen, but it wasn't. You can also get a wireless keyboard for them, but I wouldn't bother - I wouldn't want a laptop in pieces.

You can do iWork stuff on it which is pretty nice, but it's not quite different enough from the iPod or iPhone yet. I'd like to see the next generation - this feels beta.

I'd like one but it wouldn't really serve me any purpose other than novelty...which I might still consider worth the price.... :)

oh! and the app for the period table of elements is really cool. You can get 3D glasses for it, too.

Check out the demo:

It the iPad is great if you have use for such things. If you are highly technical and spend most of your time doing movie editing, complex photo manipulation, or other professional stuff, the iPad obviously can't help you. But if you want a nice piece of tech with a easy to use UI that lets you browse the net, e-mail, watch films, listen to music, play games, etc, the iPad will serve you very will.

I'm getting an iPad, and it won't replace my laptop because I do more than those basic things on it, but it will certainly make a very good device for those functions, and the apps will be a lot of fun.

If you are a person who only uses a laptop for net browsing and stuff, the iPad could very easily replace it, but only if you also have a desktop computer to sync the iPad with.

So you're buying a new expensive item which does less than your current machine? Why? I don't see the logic behind buying an inferior piece of equipment when you have something better.

I also don't see how anybody would want to use the iPad for web browsing, it has no keyboard, except for that horrible touchscreen. How are you supposed to type with any real speed?

The entire machine sounds about as useful as a water pistol, but less amusing once you get bored with it and look at how much money it cost.

Because it's new and shiny, of course! :)

I tried the touch screen keyboard and it really wasn't that bad. It's about the same size as my titanium one for my desktop. And has about the same sensitivity. I could type really fast on it right away.

That's why you get the next generation, too!

Even if I had the money (Which I don't), I would'n buy the iPad. Apple has become even more evil than Microsoft. With the iPad you obliged to use applications approved by Apple, and the books you reading on the iPad must be bought at the Apple store and thus approved by your watchful Big Brother Steve Job. After a few years the battery is down and can't be replaced, so you must as a good sheep buy the product anew, which overall is bad for the environments and give even more money to Apple.
Even worst is that peoples got a positive vision of Apple because of their cool designs and cool ad. Something "cool" can't be evil right...
