I'm on the verge of installing Windows 7 permanently, i have access to both 32 and 64 bit versions (2 pack, full non OEM versions), and before i make a permanent install and starts putting time into reinstalling a billion games, has anyone got any experience with Win7 64 bit and gaming they'd like to share?

How many games are compatible? Have you found any major problems with gaming under 64 bit (Heard a few stories for WinXP-64)? Do you have to tweak/patch alot? Do games run faster? How well do the "Windows XP emulation" work with older games? Can you install (online) games under a none-admin account and run it without problems when, say updating which really cause lots of rights problems?

Thanks for any feedback.

64 bit Windows has no compatibility with 16 bit software. So, if anything is compatible with Windows 95, it won't run under any MS 64 bit operating system. 32 bit Window 7s may be able to run old 16 bit software.

I have NEVER encountered a game that doesn't run on Windows 7 64 bit. But I don't really play a lot of pre 2000 games..

Some games don't work with Windows XP. I have found one that doesn't work too well with it.

Windows 64bit uses a compatibility layer so anything 32bit runs close to natively without affecting performance. Many people use games on Windows 64bit without major issue

Thanks for the replies.

I'm considering keeping a WinXP-32 partition handy for games that refuse to work. As long as NVidia keeps pumping out drivers for XP, i should be safe.

Works fine. You can update from a Non-admin account, but you might need to install under an admin account. For 16 Bit things you may want to use Compatability mode or a virtual machine with XP/2k/98/ReactOS.

Def go for 7 64bit, unless your game is really old it should work. Everything that worked in XP should work in Win 7 with compatibility options. Been a systems admin for 10 years and run my own computer repair business.
