Who in here has completely designed a city, outside of the SimCity games?

I am currently working on a city that runs entirely on renewable resources, and with minimal sprawl. I call it Greenwheel, because it runs on green technology, and the road pattern resembles a wheel from an aerial view. And, it's also a tribute to Greensburg, Kansas, a town that was nearly wiped off the map in 2007 by an F5 tornado, and has been rebuilt using environmentally-conscious building techniques.

I created an underground city on paper. I find Sim City to be an easy interface to check results. I wish it was more like CAD programs on the design side. I wish my CAD would run simulations.

My city was hand-drawn. I would love to get AutoCAD, but it's really expensive, and I don't know if there is a Mac version.

Same with ArcINFO (the GIS software that most people use).

I have Visio and Auto-cad that I use at work. My boss bought me extra licenses so I could work from home when necessary. I will have to look at ArcINFO because right now I use a converter that changes the charts into regular pictures. It is hit and miss, because I have no preview. Being able to view the charts before converting them for my blueprints would be nice. I am sure your new job will give you the tools so you can play in addition to making money.

I finished both the key map and comprehensive plan for my city.

That is much deeper than mine was (even though mine was underground) :clown:
I don't think mine would have been pretty if it had to grow larger. I would probably end up with people having to live above the sanitation plant.

No one earth. Real cities are, at most, partly design. Mostly they happen.

One of the few Designed Cities, Brasillia is a dreadful sterile city in the wrong place.

Military bases are small towns that are designed. Some are comfortable and some were put together completely wrong. Zoning boards try to design cities by influencing what is built where in an effort to ensure comfort and productivity of the residents. Utility companies try to forecast what will be be built where too. They influence zoning boards so the infrastructure the utilities pay for will encourage growth in areas that provide maximum profit to the utility.
