So, has anyone been to Youtube today? Apparently it's been 5 years to the date since www.youtube.com was registered as a domain.

Sure it may be a breeding ground for the worst the internet has to offer (second only to 4chan) but it's also an integral part of the information superhighway. It's kind of hard to imagine what things would be like without it. For example, this nice little "embed YouTube video" button on the reply form here wouldn't even exist.

Your thoughts?

Without youtube, there would be a different superpower video provider cutting deals with big media, or a common standard of video would be agreed apon, but shared between many providers. In that case it's unlikely google would buy up all the sites, and so you wouldn't have targeted ads following you about everywhere.

In other words if they didn't monopolise the market when they did, we'd probably be better off.

It's still a viable way to get new music out, for many bands. I've edited quite a few clips (from live footage) that went on there. I (think I) know they have censorship, but I haven't come across it with my own work, yet. Google video has the same problem, I should add.
