modern cell phones unreliable
Is it just me or the reliablitlty of cell phones, with cameras mp3 players, video capture ect, has gone down the toilet now days.
I have this sony errisson w550i it as given me nothing but problems WSOD, won't charge, mp3 player skipping the list goes on, At least with the older phones with monochrome display. didn't crash like every 5 minutes. We should all go back to basics (but each to there own i guess).
It's like that with everything: more gimlets, more opportunity for things to go wrong. Ask someone who remembers all the stuff that went wrong with cars in the late '50s and early '60s when power windows, power tops and pushbutton trannies were all the rage. They sure caused their share of rage.
Yeah the newer cell phones are crap. I just got a new Motorola after using Nokias for years and have been tempted to run over my new phone I am so frustrated with it. Speaking of new cells I heard the Razr has battery life of less than one year because it is made so cheaply (though you wouldn't know that from the price of one). My Nokia 5180i battery lasted 4 years before started giving me the slightest problem of not fully recharging. The whole thing of playing games and listening to music on your phone is just crazy. Most people that want portable music have an mp3 already or a CD player. I heard tv on phones is coming up soon. How stupid! Just give me a freakin phone that I can call out on and won't give me problems.
Nowadays programmers are using high-level programming languages to write applications, such as the ones that run on the devices you mentioned. Applications written in high-level programming languages, especially ones that are interpreted rather than compiled, use up more hardware resources than applications written in low-level programming languages or assembly language. The reason why current technology uses high-level programming languages is that they are a) easy to program in b) less time consuming to program in and c) in many cases offer more features. While the number of new applications and applications that use advanced features has increased due to the innovation in high-level programming languages, speed and efficiency, and thus also reliability, have diminished. I do not see high-level programming languages falling out of popularity. But do not despair, hardware components are improving all the time, becoming much more faster and efficient. Because of Moore's Law, I think we can rest assured that there will be a time when computers will run so fast most of us will not know what to use the extra speed for (although there are some ideas out there)!
There is always, of course, the truly defective product or the poorly-designed product. But these are products that people generally avoid and tend not to simply "live with," whereas the recent programming paradigm of high-level programming languages is becoming unavoidable in most new products. To determine whether a technology product is defective or poorly-designed, Amazon.com reviews are usually useful.
