How old is the Mac? Which OS X version? And why do you need a new browser to continue surfing? (Is your current browser going away or something?)

Safari on the Mac is a decent, fast, lightweight browser. Chrome is not quite mature on Mac yet, regardless of what Google tells you. Firefox is easily the most full-featured, but it is somewhat slower than Safari and looks sort of funny because it doesn't blend in with the Aqua theme.

I find that if I have more than about 100 tabs open in any one browser, it slows way down. As a heavy internet user, I use a mixture of browsers on my Mac, mostly Firefox, Chrome, and Opera. I think my favorite is Chrome. There are also some browsers that are written only for Mac, like Shiira and Omniweb.

right now i am using Firefox 4.0 Beta 4, it's a bit glitch because it a Beta but it's fast and i like it. Also you can change the "Skin" of it to whatever you like, the skin being the picture at the top behind the too bar.

Yes, there is but they just announced the drop of PowerPC support. And even their Intel Mac version aren't as good as their Windows one.

Thanks to all for the feed back.

A salesmen in store confirmed my conclusion that I just need to get a new computer.

Mine is a mac 10.3.9. Too old to handle the new browsers.
But if I get a new computer Ill keep all this in mind.

What is significant about September 1st?

Anyway, there are a few browsers over on DarwinPorts, like Epiphany, many of which will work fine on older hardware. (or Dillo for really old hardware).

Darwinports is a dead project, and I actually wouldn't really trust the stuff from their repos. There is Macports, but they no longer offer support for 10.3

So definitely a PowerPC Mac. For something that old, your best bet to keep running relatively modern software would be Debian. I have an old iMac that runs Debian Lenny quite well; I can help you out if you have trouble installing it.

Cool.

Should I go to a store, or try to download it from the net?

If you mean Debian, it can be downloaded here.

What are the specs of the Mac? It might be able to run 10.4, and that's still compatible with most new software.
