Who thinks Microsoft should call the next version of Windows (after Vista), Windows AS?
They did Windows NT, which was appropriately unreliable, dumbed-down, aesthetically displeasing and generally really really irritating, so why not....

Happy New Year everyone :)

I think Windows NT had something to do with wide-area-networks. I think NT stood for Networking Technology, or something like that.

I thought it was "New Technology", although I guess "Neanderthal Technology" would have made more sense.

It'll never happen. However, this is an excellent opportunity for satirical descriptions of the new Windows ASOS! Now with an even more literal GUI. No more pushing the start button to turn your computer off. (Why would anybody want to turn their computer off?)

Windows ECPLE Extreme Copy Protection Lockdown Edition

You can't even boot it up, but at least that'll prevent you from pirating with it.

2007, this thread was made that long ago? Once being a lurker on WP, it's amazing what you still remember reading after being an active member for a while. Anyway, with computers, science and technology all being special interests of mine, I remember thinking this thread was particularly funny. Of course, in regards to the original question, we now know that the Windows version that came out after Windows Vista was Windows 7. I think Windows AS would of been a lot cooler than the current Windows 7, that I think any Microsoft product is that great though. What do you think?

I'm guessing that you're referring to Midori, the OS after Windows 7 (not after Vista). It is a complete recoding of Windows, with a new kernel written in managed code. NT is an acronym for "New Technology", so AS could stand for "After Suffering", assuming that the new plaform is any better than the piece-of-$hit NT kernel that Windows uses now.

EDIT: When I made this post, I was unaware of how old this thread was.

There is a Windows AS. It's called Mac OS X.

Yes, I bumped it because a post in General Autism discussion reminded me of it.

The NT kernel has existed since 1996, and maybe even before then with NT 3.51. OTOH, OS X's ancestry roots from the 1970s from AT&T's Bell Labs and was further raised and educated at UC Berkeley as FreeBSD before Steve Jobs stumbled upon FreeBSD while at at NeXTStep.
