Hi,

I'm not happy with my Firefox/Comodo combination and want to switch.

Which set is good, reliable, user-friendly for someone who isn't very computer-knowledgeable, and free or reasonably priced?

I might be willing to pay, but not much; and no Norton, MacAfee, or Comodo please. I'm leaning against Firefox too, definitely don't like Explorer, and haven't tried Chrome.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can advise.

The best browser is Chrome, and the best antivirus is AVG or Kaspersky

Thanks. That was quick.

Do you know if it's worth my getting the paid version of AVG or Kaspersky?

Try out Chrome and Firefox. If you don't like either, give Opera a try. If you're really feeling desperate, there is always Safari.

For antivirus, just install Microsoft Security Essentials. There really is no need to consider a third-party antivirus, especially the paid ones (which oddly enough tend to be by far the worst).

I would go with MSE as well. It is free and absolutely great. Free, solid, AV software should be a basic Human right in this day and age of identity theft and other miscellaneous internet mischief

A free, solid, OS should be a basic human right in this day and age. Hm.... there is Ubuntu.

You're right. I have been meaning to try Ubuntu for some time.

FireFox and Avast or MSE (or Kaspersky if you want a paid commercial one).

AVG is not that good.

Make sure you only install one security program for real-time protection.

Personally, I don't use AV software w/Windows, and have only been hit once with something nasty. As far as browsers are concerned, I prefer Opera, and have been using it in conjunction with Firefox since it became freeware in 2005. (Posting this via Opera via Ubuntu running LXDE/Openbox rather than the default GNOME/Metacity)

Thanks everyone. My comp won't let me install MSE as it claims I don't have "genuine Windows". It came with the comp, so... ?

Avast and Firefox? What do you think?

Do you have Windows or a Mac?

With a Mac, one doesn't usually need any anti-virus software, because there are little to no malware/viruses on Macs.

BTW, welcome back to WP! Haven't seen you in a while.

That's a problem. Did you buy the comp new or used? If you bought it someplace like Best Buy or wherever, it should already be activated. Check your Windows license key (should be a sticker somewhere) and try to activate it.

I thought you said you didn't like Firefox?

If MSE won't install, try Panda Cloud Antivirus.

Hi Tim, and thanks! :)

I have Windows.

Orwell, the comp was new. Like four years ago. What is this "activation" of which you speak? There is an XP sticker on the back with a long string of letters and numbers.

Tell you the truth, I'm kind of leery of getting any more involved with MS than I have to. I've kinda had it with them since Vista was inflicted on me at work.

I do like Firefox, but I don't like Comodo. And I don't know if that's Comodo's fault or a problem with the browser/AV combo. That's why I asked the original question in the way that I did.

"Activation" is sending in your license key (that long sting of letters and numbers) in to MS to prove that you haven't pirated Windows. Without activation, MS may deny you security updates, and perhaps even put your computer into reduced functionality mode (not entirely sure what this entails). I would try to activate your installation. I'm not sure how to do that in XP- probably poke around the control panel, it might be somewhere near Windows Update.

Ah. I don't think the browser should interact badly with the AV, so it is Comodo's fault.

Any good antivirus is acceptable. I personally have never tried Panda Cloud Antivirus but if that's what you want (instead of Avast), go for it.

If you want to get rid of the Genuine messages and prompts by the way, use RemoveWGA (don't worry, perfectly legal).
