How do I change a personal pic into the right format to use as an avatar?

Edit it to the max dimensions of WP in Paint or someother visual program.

In GIMP or Photoshop:

Right click the image, then select Image -> Scale Image.

You'll get a dialog box like this:

Image

Make sure the width and height are locked, and scale down to the size wanted.

GIMP and Photoshop can convert many image formats. What format is the image?

Whatever it is for standard "my pictures" on Windows XP. Sorry, computer illiterate here.

It's probably .jpg already then. You can right-click the icon and select Properties to get the filetype and other information.

I don't know, when I get it to the right size and try to upload it it tells me it's not the right file format. But thanks for your help, I'll mess around a bit more after work.
