Hello!
I used to own a game server years ago, that unfortunately got DDOSed.
Got fed up, and got rid of the server (did not want it any more anyway).
Is there any way of helping prevent DDOS?
I know I cannot stop it.

Is there any way of preventing it or stopping the person who did it in the first place?
Reason why I ask such a question is because I might want to set up another game server or SQL server.

Thanks.

Since DDOS is the equivalent of a roomful of people shouting down a single speaker the only guaranteed protective actions are not letting anyone in at all or closing down the room altogether.

Going by your avatar, Linux is in use and that has certain basic protections on the IP stack level. More can be provided with the firewall or using an IPS but ultimately, since DDOS works by sheer weight of traffic, I can't think of anything which might actively prevent it from occurring.

See if this gives you a few ideas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack

If you have any information about the person responsible, see if you can work with the server provider to track them down and threaten legal action.
