"The point of all this is to try to explore some of the weirdness of quantum mechanics, which suggests that space is actually a giant party of random particles that are popping in and out of existence too fast for us to see. The hope is that a laser this powerful might actually be able to tear apart the vacuum of space-time itself"

linkage

now i have only read the article here but it sounds like the black mesa project.

i think any risks of actual earth wide destruction is almost nonexistent (from what we know today)
think of the LHC and its micro singularities, true they are dangerous, but at that scale they evaporate in nanoseconds, thus in effect they are "harmless".
i think the scale issue will have something to say here as well.

As long as Cthulhu isn't crawling out of it and Freeman is to save us with his crowbar, then we are fine.

Maybe they are hoping that candy will spill from the wound.

Anyone else think it is silly to say it could tare a hole in space time? we can guess what we think space time might really be for a start then second of all we'd have to know how much energy we need to "tare it".

although it could throw us to oblivion lol.

@patrick, yes it is a bit silly, i am excited about this project excactly because it yields such promise in answering the question "what is space-time"

i do think they have a pretty good idea of what they want to accomplice theoretically, they just need a way of testing it.

as for the power issue, wouldnt you find more intensive light in supernovae?
my reasoning being that if it already happens then the risks cant be that great.

i personally believe that any rift will contain nothing but teapots and pasta platters.

:lmao: f*****g cliff racers. The stupid combat music going for 20 minutes while you wonder where the enemy is, then out of nowhere the cliff racer appears after you tune out the music...

Man, the cliff racers are legendary to me. Being level 3, scouring the mountains, ineffectively trying to hit the cliff racer with whatever low level weapon I have for 5 minutes until it finally dies... ah, good times
