Just got a Huawei Ascend, yeah, you can tell me it stinks, but I love it anyway LOL. Anyway, 2.1 update1 Android platform. Basic Question: What are some must have apps for this thing? I have YouTube, Facebook, Pandora, and some stupid games already but I feel like I'm missing out on something. I want an ereader too but nothing I can't uninstall. And unless highly recommended I don't want to download a rooter on it either. LOL I'm not picky am I? So anyway, back to basics....must have apps?

you can use Amazon Kindle, Google Books (my favorite), or Nook for the ereaders.

Meebo if you want to IM people on different networks like google talk, jabber, facebook etc...
Vevo for music videos (right now only for people in the US)
Opera Minior Opera Mobile replace the built in browser and use this faster then the built in and when you have low service.

Thanks, for the reader I ended up getting Kobo, just because it seemed to have the best reviews in the Android market. I had already gotten Vevo. I'll check out the rest, thanks. :)

If you want some fun games, install Angry Birds, Angry Birds: Seasons and Angry Birds: Rio.

Here's some of what I have on my HTC Evo

Productive apps:
Barcode scanner (scans QR codes as well as regular barcodes)
A bubble level app
Google Earth
Grooveshark (a subscription based music app by a local startup. It was recently pulled from the market, but you can get it elsewhere)
Firefox (self explanatory, though it takes longer to load than the built-in browser)
E6B (used for flight planning if you're a pilot)
Google Goggles (a really cool toy from Google. Take a picture of something and it will try to identify it)
PDANet (third party tethering app)
Google Reader

Time wasters:
Angry Birds (I don't play it very often, but it's a nice diversion)
Tazer (for tasing bros!)
OpenSoduku (A sudoku game)
Virtual Vuvuzela (because it can be fun to drive people crazy in certain situations, especially younger siblings)

Thanks you guys! :) I tried the barcode scanner, it says I need an autofocus camera or it won't scan. It won't scan so I guess I don't have autofocus LOL Google Earth is great thanks. Gonna try google goggles. I was unsure but since you said it, I'll go ahead and check it out. I like Poke A Mole for the game thing LOL Not only is it fun and gets me moving, but it also annoys the hell out of my other half LOL

xscope (the best browser)
retro camera
shush
documents to go
winamp
tweetdeck
wapedia
vplayer
words with friends
adw launcher
appbrain
tesla LED
camcard (western)
pulse
urbanspoon
heytell
fruit ninja
imo

Also, a great site to follow for the latest droid news is http://www.droid-life.com they have app reviews and suggestions. There's also the website for appbrain which is very useful not just with the application but for searching for apps in general.

You could try various barcode scanners... In any case, they're quite neat to have, especially to find books etc.
Google Goggles IMO worked better in the past... some of the things I used to be able to take pictures of, don't really work anymore... among one thing is business cards...

Games:
Angry birds (you can get it for free with a few unintrusive ads)
Fruit Ninja (it got really fun after they added the arcade mode)
Pipe dreams (a small pipe puzzle game with sucky gfx, but fun nevertheless)
Air control (lite) (fun "drawing" type of game where you guide airplanes and helis to their respective runways and pads... gets quite hard, but is a good trainer for multitasking)
Solitaire (because anything that can be used as a computer needs this game:D)

Apps:
doubletwist (good music/video player app, it tends to bug a bit if the default music player app is also used)
handycalc (incredibly versatile calculator with graphing etc.)
Dropbox (makes it easy to sync files between your computer(s) and the phone via an online folder... You can get up to 2 GB of space for free, and referrals add more space to your account)
Scanlife (another barcode reader that can read QR codes and most normal barcodes... I primarily use it to get the ISBN off of books to find stores or PDFs)
ASTRO file manager (good file manager)
