I know what you mean. I hate it. Nobody ever even bothers to solve their own problems. Computers really aren't that complicated, people are just lazy, and want me to do everything. I don't know how many times I've had to go over to my neighbors house with their loud and obnoxious children and try to make their computer faster. Then when its going to cost money to fix it, they'll just buy a new computer. What? Seriously? And don't even bother taking my advice on what to buy, just go to walmart and get the cheapest piece of crap you can find. Then, wonder why it's so slow the week after.

Open up a computer business and start charging each customer over one hundred for any job that requires at least an hour to work on (fixed service cost). Most will surprisingly be ok with it.

i got a job maintaining terminals in a company, one will be amazed at what they will pay for "unverified" labor, ie. no exams.

I fix up all my friends and family's computers for free.... I actually enjoy doing that kind of thing. I should look into getting a job in tech support somewhere, as I'm tired of the backbreaking labor I do at this point

I actually did this. I only got friends and family as customers, and they all expect free help. I'm looking into various forms of advertising.

the story of my life, my dad is always asking me to transfer files to a flash drive. not only that he does no upkeep on his and it's god awful slow, not to mention he keeps it on night and day.

i have the same model siting next to my gaming machine, and i did the same to it. but now i turn them off at night and my vaio is slow but it's faster then dads. my new one is almost as fast as the day i bought it.

and he yells at his all the time, meanwhile i'm thinking "look what you put it through genius no wonder it's slow". i think most of it is those 500,000 or more emails he has on it. i'm not kidding either i literally got a notice from windstream that our email server is overloaded, they had to expand it a whole gig or something.

That's the thing. You need to advertise. And location is important.

I once fixed my uncles laptop, he said the screen was not working, so, after driving 30 miles to get the computer and 30 miles back, i turn the thing on, and the screen is working, it is just very, very dim, he had been playing with the setting and turned the screen brightens to 1. I charged $10 for "fixing" the screen, and $20 for crumb removal (the thing was filled to bursting with bred crumbs).

Very good advice, unfortunately most people assume that they can use a computer until they've bought it and pressed something. Doesn't help that most schools, etc just seem to focus on "this is word, you can type letters in it, everyone type a letter now" and nothing about how to avoid breaking stuff.

If I fix your computer you pay one of the highest price a person can pay. Not in money. But, if you bring me a computer to fix, expect that I will look in your media folder - and yes I will find where you hid the 'special' one because anyone who has to ask someone else to fix their computer isn't smart enough to hide things very well. Because you may be one of those idiots who keeps clicking on "Want to see nekid grls?! Click here" popups or clicking "hawt girl video totally real no viruses honest.avi.exe" torrent files, in which case I will have to scrub out a whole lot of malware and virus filth from your machine. Which I'm probably doing anyway, but I'm checking for that stuff so I can tell you exactly what protection you should be using and make really nasty comments if you call me 2 months from now with the same problem. I'm not a cyber-STD clinic, I got fed up with dealing with the same problem every few months because someone couldn't be bothered to even learn how to get their rocks off safely on the Internet.

Me knowing that, even if I'm a very discrete person and won't tell anyone... that is a price that a lot of people are not willing to pay. No one wants to look the person who fixed their computer in the eye and get told the reason their computer was all messed up was the weird fetish websites they kept going to. Even worse getting told that yes, I managed to save their special video folder, oh except for the following files... It may be 'free' tech support, but a lot of people are not willing to risk how much it may cost in embarrassment. I get asked to fix a lot less computers now, mostly just the occasional HD failure the professional places can't extract data from since I have higher success rate. And only by women these days.
