I am presently setting up some family-and-friends Windows 7 (Home Premium) computers for people who are 900 miles away from me. One is for a friend who has never ever even used a computer, and another is for my soon-to-be-7 grandson.

Is this a good way for me to be able to help them with whatever kind of system problem/s might come up ...

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... Connection

??

And if so, then how can I even find those computers on the internet in the first place?!

In each case, I will be able to first set things up with each of those computers sitting right here beside my own. So, I will have no problem making accounts for myself on each of them.

IP usually. Router complicates matters.. (its probably there, next to the modem).

This is when I gave up and told them they are on their own, because I absolutely hate messing with routers and networking.

Open a run prompt (windows key+r) .. then type in cmd and hit enter. Then type in "ipconfig /all" without the quotes. Then look for the active wireless and/or ethernet that has a ip address assigned to it. If its something like 291.29.213.21 then its probably directly connected. But something more like 192.168.10.3. Would mean its behind a router.

If its 192.168.0.3 or 192.168.1.3 or anything along those lines, take the first 3 sets of numbers, aka "192.168.1" and then change the last number to 1. Then figure out the admin pw for the router. (admin/admin admin/password). Then hit google or wait for a response from someone else because thats where my help stops. I believe when your dealing with the router you have to set it up to forward your connection from the router to the computer in question. Because if you try to connect to the IP of the connection it will hit the router, and the router will say "wtfwhozors?" and you won't get anywhere.

I already know the "phone number" for my friend's "AT&T Data Connect" mobile device, and no router will be involved there ... and that is the first machine I will be doing! So, maybe at least that one will not be too difficult. For the other two machines, my younger daughter and my grandson are using a cable modem/router combination I will have to figure out how to navigate.

There are several, even better ways of doing remote desktop that work great and best of all, are free. These include LogMeIn available at http://www.logmein.com, Show My PC available at http://www.showmypc.com, and Team Viewer available at http://www.teamviewer.com. Log Me In is the one I use the most, and it also works via a web browser that is equipped with Java. These software packages require very little complicated router setup.

This information and much more is available in my book, "Tech Tactics Money Saving Secrets" available on Kindle (http://www.amazon.com/Tactics-Money-Saving-Secrets-ebook/dp/B004WKT03C/) or Nook (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Tech-Tactics-Money-Saving-Secrets/William-Keeley/e/2940012361844/?itm=1&USRI=tech+tactics). Those without Nooks and Kindles can also download free e-reader applications for these devices from Amazon or Barnes and Noble. It will soon be available in paperback format as well.

I thank you! The MS option I have mentioned was the first thing I saw when I did a web search, and now I will go take a look at your suggestions.

Even if you choose the trial version of Log Me IN, you will still be able to use it after the trial period expires only you will have access to the free features (which do what you need).

Cool ... and now I just had to come toss this into the mix ...

It has been along time since my grandson and I have sat and done that together (like we should soon be able to do "long-distance")! However, we do usually run it a bit slower ...
