Are you conflating the multiverse theory (lots of branes) with the many-worlds theory of quantum mechanics?

It does sound that way.
Quick, dirty, and mildly inaccurate synopsis: Brane theory involves multiple universes, each of which has differing physical laws. The many-worlds theory of quantum mechanics (also known as the Copenhagen interpretation) says that since there is no mathematical preference for any one quantum event over any other, all possible events do occur, each in their own universe. Most of the universes should be indistinguishable from one another, because it's not going to make much difference to you whether, say, a given electron is deflected to the left, or slightly less to the left, during an interaction; but if enough of them pile up, it could actually make a difference on a macro scale.
"Belief" is inappropriate for scientific theories. They can be proved, indicated, or (as in both brane theory and the Copenhagen interpretation) hypothesized and supported by mathematics; belief is not required, any more than one is required to believe in gravity or the Lorenz contraction.
