Okay...here goes...
for biology we're dissecting a mouse.
problem is...prof. wants us to keep the mouse alive during the dissection!
oxygen is provided, and we want the simplest way to keep the mouse breathing, while preventing the collapse of lungs.
deadline...tomorrow(okey dokey, i'm from Taiwan.)
heart lung machine is not available(obviously).
i need help, fast :)

thats pretty sick imo, but yeah happens all the time everywhere. Animal experiments still going strong unfortunately.

(Thread moved from Random to Science and technology)

It sounds very cruel to keep the mouse alive during a dissection!

When I dissected a rat at school it was very much dead.

That seems very cruel to me. Can't you refuse to do it on conscientious grounds?

I find it very surprising one of the requirements is to keep the mouse alive, but no provision beyond oxygen is provided to fulfil that requirement.

I suspect the mice will die from blood loss anyway, making the experiment both cruel and unnecessary.

I think if you don't agree with carrying the dissection out you could refuse, and back up your refuse with evidence as to why your experiment is unnecessary and will cause needless suffering to the mice, without furthering scientific knowledge.

Refuse and report your teacher. He is violating several laws against cruelty to animals.

That is definitely highly unethical, and illegal in most countries (certainly illegal where I'm from). I don't know what your local laws are like, but I think you should at least speak with the school administrators to figure out what's going on here. I highly doubt they would have approved that.

I don't know anything about the laws in Taiwan, but this seems shockingly cruel and illegal to the majority of people.

I would refuse to do it, but then I was never afraid of teachers or any authorities. Can you argue and get special permission to perform your dissection on a dead mouse? If you can't, or feel like you can't, then I don't know what to say except it might make you want to drop biology.

animal protection act seems to set out what is abuse or cruelty to animals in taiwan <after some brief research,I am likely wrong though as i dont know taiwan law.>
It seems needlessly cruel to me.
I've never dissected a rat before, merely cows organs.

after some thinking i'm beginning to doubt what our professor really wants us to do. it is unethical to do a "vivisection" and i am going to double check regulations prior the experiment. i'm beginning to think his(the professor)question is purely hypothetical.

This is perhaps the most horrible thing I have ever heard. Your teacher needs to be kicked in the head and kept in solitary confinement, away from animals.

Forever.

Your professor is in need of qualified mental-counselling.
The professor is obviously under a hypnotic-influence from
something that crosses the lines of psychosis/insanity.
Professor needs recover senses to return to being sane/rational.

Read up on the Milgram Shock-Experiments and explain
what you can to your professor about the need to draw
the line when you know an act is unconscionable.
Becoming modern-day Nazis is still a dangerous reality.
