Alright, I've got the basics of SQL down. Now, back to a programming language or something. Whatever they are called. Now I really don't know which languages or compilers or whatnot are available for me, given that I have no money to spend. I remember when I used Q-Basic and made some very basic stuff and forgot it all back in and around 1992-93. I know my friends were studying C++ in high school but I never learned much from them. So I am basically a beginner and want to start from scratch.

Suggestions?

as far as free compilers for C/C++ go, I'm a big fan of Bloodshed Dev-C++

Install Linux (no cost) and you have all the compilers and interpreters and databases you have ever heard of (at no cost) with a wide range of IDEs to make things easy.

E.g. monodevelop is C/C++/C#/Boo/Java/Nemerle/ILasm/ASP.NET Development Environment
or eclipse, for another range of languages. And kdevelop. And....

Try Googling "linux under windows"

Try http://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw/. Source forge has plenty of free, unencumbered compilers and interpreters without spy or adware. I like what another poster posted, "Install Linux." However, if you must write for the Microsoft plateform, then MinGW is what I would use.

All right, I have it downloaded but hitting a dead end. How do I start it all up? The Getting Started only states how to install it and leaves it at that.

Try visiting this site. It tells you what you need to do to get it going.

A - I have it installed
B - I have the destination folder open, showing all the libraries and so forth.

http://www.mingw.org/wiki/Getting_Started is where I'd visit first. The one thing about this package is that it is a command line compiler. It does not contain a graphical integrated Development Environment.

Since it is a command line program, I would recommend opening up a dos console window. Start > run and type in cmd and hit enter.

Try visiting thins link as well:
http://www.mingw.org/wiki/MinGWforFirstTimeUsers

I have used MinGW to write some pretty complex programs. The link I poseted here will show you how to compile a Hello World type of program.

If you don't, then you can open up edit or notepad and quickly code it.

Microsoft offers "express" editions of its compilers that are free. Go to www.microsoft.com and search for Visual Studio 2008 Express.

In that case, I'm going to need a textbook at this rate.
