I'm trying to help a friend. Spent over a hour tonight on her computer trying to load software for a new Lexmark all in one printer/copier/fax. Here's the problem her computer can't recognize CD's. The PC has 2 CD drives and a floppy drive but the computer neither recognizes when you pop a CD in nor does the CD drives show up on Control Panel. Only the Floppy drive shows up on control panel.

Went to the Lexmark website to download the printer driver, but it says the download does not include ALL of the software to run the all in one printer.

Windows XP edition. Can someone give me some help here? I'm thinking there is a way to go into Hardware device driver and check a box that must be unchecked in order to reinstall her CD drives. I've don't think before on Win 95, but I'm just unfamiliar with XP. I have XP Pro edition on my computer and her edition is surprisingly different looking which threw me for a lot.

Will go back next week to work on it somemore. He computer is so slow the driver download said it would take over 3 hrs so I left at that.

First of all, I've been very dissapointed with Lexmark products and would never buy one.

When windows fails to recognize drives, my experience has been that it was because they were dead things, but my experience has been very limited.

Couple ideas..

1. Check cables, power, BIOS. Make sure drives are working at all. Try audio CD.
2. Boot to Safe Mode, remove all CD/DVD drives from Device Manager and restart in Normal.
3. May take a while to redetect and reload drivers. XP should do this by itself, but may have to restart again.
4. Put drivers on USB stick if possible and use that.
