i'm looking for a program or software of any kind that i can make a database in.

most of the database programs i found were not what i was looking for. i don't want a program that stores info and hides it.

what i'm looking for is something like the database in xenosaga 3. the database in there is like a virtual encyclopedia. it has several categories like characters, culture, locations, etc... and in those categories are the files that explain everything in the game.

the journal in kingdom hearts series is similar to the one in xenosaga.

but i don't even know if there is a program like that.

i've tried programs i have like power point it was decent but text is limited but pics are nice.

i've even tried to make a system with folders but that's a headache.

if i am ever going to write down my story i need a database in order to keep track of everything involved with the story and keep it straight. the story in my head has changed so much now that i can't use it as a reference.

I believe what you want is called a concordance (click) but I don't know of any ready-made software for it. Maybe having the term for it will help your search.

It sounds like you're mixing the database and the interface into that database into a single thing (they're separate).
If you would like to learn about databases I recommend Oracle Express: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/datab ... eId=ocomen
That particular version is free and you can learn transferable skills using it; it comes with a version of Oracle Application Express that allows for fast creation of database interfaces.
It has a bit of a learning curve but that is what we're all about :)
Have fun!

If you are Mac user, this might be what you're looking for:

VooDooPad

Back when I had a Mac, I would type up encyclopedias about my special interests in VooDooPad. It's almost like having your own Wikipedia.

sadly i am a windows user but that sounds like what i am looking for.

to jedaustin:

i call it a database because xenosaga does, i had no idea that the database in xenosaga was different from a real database, the database in xenosaga is like a wiki on the net.

or are you saying that there are two different kinds of database software?

i just want a program that i can group all the elements in my story by category. or something that is close to that.

edit: i think i found something that might work, i looked at oracle but you have to register to download, i hate those sites.

i found another program called treepad lite, this might work i can only use text but that's fine, i just wanted a little program that i could keep all the crap together in one place.

well you could try the database manager in open office (free and easy)
but as i see it it is simply an interface for sql servers

i did try it, and it was not what i was looking for.

i found a program though that will work.

maybe now i can think about starting the project, i just got to write everything down first. my story has developed a ton of terms, worlds, locations and what not that it will take a while to sort it all out, i also have to describe everything how it was originally or what works best.

How about a personal (offline) Wiki?

http://stickwiki.sourceforge.net/

It sounds like you either need a wiki as suggested or just a blog if you want something free and online. Try blogger or wordpress for a free account.

You can set posts to private if you don't want other people reading them and add tags for categorising the blog posts. In each blog post you can add text and images/video/links etc and also make a static contents page or search through the tags or blog content to find what you are looking for.

wiki on a stick seems to be above and beyond what i can understand.
