I've updated it and all addons to the latest versions, and I've tuned off all extra apps that I don't need and I'm still having problems and each time it freezes it seems to be taking a little longer to resume. 2 antivirus programs say my computer is clean.

I'm going to say this plain and simple. Firefox is s**t. It's s**t for everyone no matter what. Always will be.

Disable all addons and see if it still happens. If it does then disable plugins one by one to see if its a plugin that's freezing.

my IE8 [in windows 7 "premium" ] keeps locking up my underpowered celeron laptop with <2GB RAM. for example, i can't even type this message in this posting window, the hard drive just clacks and the light stays lit, and my keyboard basically goes dead- [my keyboard only works at all, offline such as in a word processor where i am typing this to copy/paste into the WP post window]. pages take up to 5 minutes to load, and half the time the screen goes opaque and the little circle "waiting" symbol replaces the mouse cursor. half the time everything crashes and i can't make IE8 start again without rebooting. all the antivirus and antispyware apps say it is clean. and i regularly empty my temp files. any ideas? thanx for your attention :)

Try killing the plugin container.
