I've been getting a black screen every time I try starting Ubuntu on my laptop for the past few weeks. Today I noticed it said this on one line of the text on the black screen:

"Stopping automatic crash report generation [fail]"

That error message doesn't really tell me anything. I'd suggest trying to boot Ubuntu in "recovery mode."

If you get to a text console, then log in and type "dmesg", or even "dmesg > dmesg.txt" to save the boot messages. Type "pwd" to check which directory they are saved in. Then you can search it for words like "error", "fail" or "readonly".
