Everything I've read on different sites says Winportal is legit but why would they be giving this away for free?

It says the Author is Microsoft Corporation.

I actually have pirated copy that I was given from the salesman for my new (old) computer, but I don't want to install it because I'd have to turn off Windows Updates.

So what is the deal with Winportal?

I DON'T TRUST IT lol.

School won't accept anything other than the docx format.

rtf is used in every text editing program i know of, it's not a OO format.
It seems like a rather unethical thing to do, force students to participate in creating a monopoly.

They even make the students with new Macs buy the Mac version of Microsoft Home and Office.

I know...I don't get it but whatever lol.

OpenOffice can save file as .docx. If you don't use any complicated formating, M$ Office should open it just fine. There's also SoftMaker Office that is usually more compatible but only the 2008 version is free and I'm not sure that version can handle .docx.

I'm guessing they meant that "Office Open XML" (.docx) is not the same thing as "Open Office Document" (.odt). Which is true.

However...

And open it. You should have no problems using OpenOffice for this.

When you go to save the document, just select "Microsoft Word 2007 XML" as the file type.

*sigh*

I got curious so I went to go reread everything.

I started a few weeks ago and I know I'm outdated lol, so I obviously misread this:

In this course, we will not accept any file extensions other than .doc, .docx, .xls, or .xlsx. Other word processing formats such as Microsoft Works, Microsoft WordPad, or WordPerfect will not be accepted (.wps, .odt, .ods, .txt, .rtf,. dotx). These are not the same programs as Microsoft Word.

So, you guys are right. I already have OpenOffice on the computer.
