Here's how to find out:

1. Get to the command prompt window your PC.

2. Start the EDIT utility.

3. Type CreateObject("SAPI.SpVoice").Speak"hello darling how are you tonight"

4. Save the file as COMPUTER_GENDER.VBS to the C:\ drive.

5. Exit EDIT.

6. Exit the command prompt window.

7. From windows, find the VBS file you just made.

8. Switch on your PC's sound.

9. Double-click on the VBS file. You should hear a voice saying, "hello darling how are you tonight" in a flat monotone.

10. Decide if the voice sounds male, female, or whatever, and select the appropriate poll option.

Thank you!

No way to do this on linux? :(
My computer's name is Hex, after a computer in the Discworld series. If I had to assign Hex (from the books) a gender, I guess it would be male So I guess that makes my computer male as well.

My computer is running Linux. But it's name is Goliath, so I'm going with male.

i have stopped thinking of my computers as anything seperate from my conscoiusness, they might have "latency" issues and access limitations but essentially they function as an extension of ones perception, memory and actions.

i would guess that makes it the same sex as me, odd question that.

Mine has a male voice.

But why on earth are your instructions to use the EDIT utility to create the file? No thanks, I'll use notepad.

I never really thought about my computer as having a gender. If anything, it's a disobedient pet.

Ha ha, and to perform sex reassignment surgery on your computer, go to
"Control Panel → Speech" (XP)
"Control Panel → Ease of Access → Text to Speech" (Vista/7)
then change the default voice.

If you only have the default voice, you can find some more by Microsoft at
http://www.cfs-technologies.com/home/?id=1.4
Microsoft Sam, Mary and Mike is the one you want.

If you are using XP, you can get Anna on Vista/7 by downloading the trail version of
Microsoft Streets & Trips. You can just extract the voice engine from the package and install it alone. If you don't how, just install the whole thing.

You can use any editor that can save plain text file. If you are not sure, just use Notepad.

Checking that out now... I'm looking for a French voice that I can include/ship with some of my software. Having some difficulty finding a free French voice that I can plug into a Visual Studio 2008 application.

Fnord it is all your fault! Your post has inspired me to go off on a tangent which will likely take several days work!

My computer is male by the way and speaks American English. I assumed there would be more culture specific voices such as British English on British Windows, French voices on French versions of Windows etc. Doesn't seem to be the case?

Well, strictly speaking, only sex is biological. Gender is a social construction relating to the roles people play and also associated with how they see themselves. So if we perceive our computer's to have certain characteristics that we associate with a certain sex, then it would be quite appropriate to say that our computer has a specific gender. Of course, the title of this thread asks about sex, so really I'm just being pedantic and nit-picky here.
