I love Linux because it is free, and it doesn't crash. I used to use Windows, but it crashed way too often. When I switched to Ubuntu it worked like a dream. I also like Linux because it is much easier to have multiple users on Linux then it is on Windows.

I like it because it's free, customizable, flexible, stable, secure, etc. I hop around distros a lot, usually end up coming back to the Debian/Ubuntu family. I'm currently giving OpenSUSE a trial, and it's a very clean, polished, professional distro. They make some very odd decisions, though (some software packages are only available on their website with the OpenSUSE Build Service, and not in the normal package manager... that seems to defeat the purpose of having a package manager, but whatever) and of course the software selection in the repositories cannot hold a candle to the all-encompassing glory of the Debian repos. It had an excellent installer, though. Even managed to correctly guess that I wanted to keep Windows there and replace my Debian install, and handled all of the partitioning correctly to achieve that.

I've normally been a GNOME guy. I'm giving KDE4 yet another try along with SUSE. I may have to migrate away once GNOME 3 becomes standard (and Unity is no better), and there are a few nice KDE apps like Kile that I want to use without loading so many extra libraries.

Pretty much. Especially the free part.

Linux is fun to muck about with. And it's free to muck about with, too. It can therefore be used for all sorts of awesomeness.

A more detailed reason why I love Linux:
Its free & secure.
So custimizable.
Not... Somewhat aggravating or miserable to use.
Great developers community.
Its a programmers dream.
I love it.
It runs so smoothly on my Linux machine:
1GB Ram
1.6 GHZ dual core Atom
Nvidia ION
I can run PS CS5 on it no problem along with other things running on several virtual desktops with no issue.

There are so many reasons but they all boil down to this:
Linux gave me so many positive things to focus on even though I grew up poor and had little money. I wouldn't have the career I have without it!

Hm, I've not used Linux as much as many of you will have done but in general it has served me well when I have. Before I had my windows PC I used to have a PC running some old distro of OpenSUSE. I used to have a dual boot of vista with ubuntu hardy heron on my previous PC but never really used it that much, though I will say that it was great to use and never crashed on me. It did have troubles with the wireless network card though, oh well. I recently put ubuntu netbook on my aspire one ZG5 after linpus got it's lovely "this object has not been configured" error that killed the OS. I've got to say that ubuntu netbook is running fine at the moment though the sidebar is a little large and takes up quite a bit of the screen at times. Oh well, that's my take on it.

I like how customisable it is. I like the fact it's free. I like that I can run a modern and up-to-date operating system on my 8-year old laptop and have it run quickly (the original install of XP on the same laptop ran painfully slowly). I like that it can run for years without needing to be defragmented/cleaned of viruses/purged of malware. It's just fantastic.

My favourite distro, at the moment, is LMDE for a production machine, and Debian with LXDE for a machine with low specs. At a pinch I'd use Lubuntu.

I'd love to use Linux, but since I like to play several games, that don't work well with WINE, I could only ever use it if I dual booted, which to me is not worth it. So I don't use it. :(

Debian+LXDE=pure class. That's what runs on my 12-year-old desktop maachine. Still completely useable. Faster than Vista/7 on a typical machine from 3 or 4 years ago.

I only like linux for embedded platforms. For servers, I only choose FreeBSD. I think it's more stable than linux. On embdeded platforms, linux is great.

Those two are at totally opposite ends of the spectrum, lol.
