How boring. Gadgets can be useful but there is more to life than gadgets.

The nerd side of me says "Ooooh shiny!", the privacy & security side of me says "God no! Not my data! Not Microsoft!"

Sadly we're already headed in that direction. (Thanks Google!)

I am looking forward to a time when 'smart-tech' is commonplace. Currently, I like to automatically sync my files across multiple computers and a smartphone. Also, having seen the Future Hotel (Duisberg, Germany) and other integrated systems, combined with what companies are promising our future to look like, I think the future is looking pretty damn cool. However, I do take issue with what appear to be truly globally shared information. I connect to all websites through their secure server and am ever cautious when installing apps that 'require' information to work.

As a recreational programmer, I can see what is currently possible using devices such as the Kinect, and don't see why (technologically, at least) we don't have these things already. Currently we have relatively primitive tablet computers that are always connected, smart-keys exist, we have smart-tables, and room sensors can detect who is in the room and what's going on and adjust the room accordingly. Have you seen oled-info.com?

I'm saying yes to the technology, but no to being 'tracked' by my tech.

we need a way to decide excactly and explicitly who gets what information as individuals, with nothing but a click to hide it again.

Can you say minority report?

It'll never happen anyhow. Just imagine the 10 trillion ways that technology will go wrong.

Any such scheme will be derailed per policy.

There's no reason to trust any entity with private data for convinience, ever.

TallyMan, You look like you could really use a Guiness right now......

Actually, what I think will start happening with this technology is that spammers will move in and everybody will be bombarded with Viagra/Cialis ads, Stock tips cranked out by Pump&Dump artists, and Debt Consolidation schemes that give also enlarge penises and breasts for those who opt in, all of them ultra-personalised for all users, aside from the fact that they will never take gender into account on the last one.

Very good point.
Microsoft's vision of the future would not be at all possible until there is a worldwide ban on advertising.
