This is for real, but they've known about for a long time. They've had a site up so if you think your computer might be infected, you can go there to check. So, anybody who gets knocked off the internet at this point, pretty much brought that on themselves.

*hurries off to check that site one last time* :lol:

it was a brilliant little money-making scheme. I'm torn between being impressed that they were so successful, and outraged that they tried in the first place.

I never ever heard of it. When I first saw the link in this topic and read the poorly written article, I expected it to be a scam. Of course, I can only agree with your statement. :3

I'm good, as I checked and I'm fine. Snopes.com is also confirming this as true.

According to the article:

In a highly unusual move, the FBI set up a safety net. They brought in a private company to install two clean Internet servers to take over for the malicious servers so that people would not suddenly lose their Internet.

And while it was the first time they'd done something like that, FBI officials acknowledged that it may not be the last, since authorities are taking on more of these types of investigations.

The temporary Internet system they set up, however, will be shut down at 12:01 a.m. EDT Monday, July 9.

Read the fine print. If you're green, you could still be infected. There's a page that tells you how to get the IP addresses of the DNS server your system is set up to point to - and it gives you the ranges of the "bad" servers. If you really want to be sure, take that extra time. (Yes, I actually checked my DNS servers. Of course, they're the settings I'd entered myself, because I use a custom DNS service, but just in case they'd been changed, I verified that. It's a lot simpler than getting those numbers when you're not on the 'net.)

i spread the word today on twitter and facebook about this, my dad spread the word to me by calling from work.

and now to try to get a hold of my pc novice friend about this....
