Okay, so I'm not very computer savvy and I'm about to buy a new laptop for college because I broke mine over the summer. I was looking at laptops yesterday at Future Shop. I had an Acer before but I don't want another Acer this time. I want it to have enough space to have music on it and to play The Sims 3. It doesn't have to be very fancy but I'd like a nice one somewhere in the $500-$600 range approx (Canadian).

We found a Toshiba laptop at Future Shop 17.3' AMD E Series E2-1800 for $429.00. Does anybody know anything about this computer? Would this be good for school? I'm not a gamer except for The Sims 2 so it doesn't have to be super fancy and I'm not willing to spend a fortune.

Sorry, I meant The Sims 3, not The Sims 2.

I think that'll be a decent laptop. :) Toshiba are a good brand.

One thing that I would consider is the weight of a 17.3 inch machine versus a 15.4 inch machine. Most 17 inch laptops are in the 7-9 pound range, whereas the smaller ones range from 4-6. Also, Ultrabooks are VERY lightweight, but not as affordable.

If you're going to be carrying the laptop around a lot, I would look at accidental damage protection if they offer it. I fix computers for a living, and repairs for a broken screen can be almost as much as the laptop cost.

Netbooks have less speedy processors but at only 12" are nice and light. Cheap too!
17" laptops can easily weigh 10lbs and are a pain to carry around! Don't do it unless you're very strong or need that physical size for some reason.

I've got the nicest balance between them, the 13.3" (or 14" for some.) still small and light, yet still rather powerful. 8-hour battery life too! Not a $1000 "ultrabook", just the same $400 from Acer.

...might be lighter options that get the job done.

Well Toshiba is a solid laptop manufacturer!

I'd say that this laptop would run Sims 3 just fine, but i'd check the system requirements just to be sure (though i'm confident it would be fine!)

Also, if you ever fill up the hard drive with music or other media, you can always buy an external USB laptop hard drive for more space.

A netbook is to a laptop as a golf cart is to a car.
