What's with this dusty old pile of junk???

Image

The local Tower Records closed up shop today, and I purchased all their sound equipment. The top unit is a stereo pre-amp/switcher, below that is a Crown CTs 600...that's 600 watts! The one on the bottom is a Crown Com-Tech 800...that's 800 watts. Not shown is a second com-tech 800, a Cd changer and a small mixing board. Those are hooked up to my set of Cerwin Vega speakers (not bought from Tower) in my garage and not in the picture right now.

Lemmie tell you this, there's a LOT of power here! Especially since professional speakers are significantly more efficient than car or even home stereo speakers, and when connected up to these amps, have the potiental to make buildings crumble to their foundations

When this stuff was installed over at the music store, it was barely even running. The input gains were all cut back, and the bass/treble controls all centered. The were driving a handful of some whimpy little 6 inch bookshelf speakers mounted in the ceiling. I had to clean all the physical dust out of these things, and then clean all the electronic "dust" out by cranking them up to high volumes. Luckily I live in a house and not an apartment! One of my neighbors stopped by not to complain, but to check out the music! I only had 1 of the 4 bars lit up on the output meter of the 600 watter unit when I was trying it out and it was enough for him to hear it across the street!

Even at low volumes however the stuff sounds great. I'm just playing the stuff nice and quiet right now. Crown amps have a nice, clear "transparent" sound to them, and excellent speaker damping characteristics. They'll make you turn your head because you think someone else is in the house!

I have no Idea about the CTs 600, but the ComTech should be a piece of quality gear, though I think that they are designed for running a distributed speaker system. -- I'm much more familiar with the MicroTech and MacroTech stuff. Will the ComTech accecpt Macrotech PiP's or is it designed more along the lines of a Microtech?

Nice score though at any rate.

BTW, if you want SERIOUS building shaking capabilites, be on the lookout for Crown MA-5000's, Crest 9001's ,10001's,10004's, and Cyberlogic Powerframes, but be forwarned, These pretty much all run on 208v and 240v Mains.

I was in my area (Seattle) during an earthquake, and the ground hardly even shook there! They were making such a big deal out of it on the news, though, that I don't even know why!
