i am not tech savvy, hence this post .... I've re-set Firefox without add-ons to clear the dreaded isearch.avg that has infected this machine.

My question is .... is there any free and reliable software I can download to scan and remove the f**** remains of the AVG ??

you mean 'avast' ?

isearch.avg.com is a broswer hijacker, ie malware, it unwittingly enters when you download something else; a month ago I had clara another piece of crappy browser hijacking malware.
