Interesting story on early arithmetic device http://bit.ly/16dZdvA

Quote:
BBC News - Greek device is world's earliest stored-programme computer

Greek archaeologists have determined the purpose of previously unrelated artefacts as the earliest-known stored-programme numerical processor.

The two Greek academics have also unleashed a diplomatic row over the origins of some of their finds, which they have so far refused to publicy identify. The pair are known to have been on the Egyptian coast several times on diving holidays, but deny illegally removing any artefacts from Egyptian waters.

History is a mystery. To think we know it all shows we don't know at all. Sometimes back then were often more advanced then we give credit for. Cool.

They claim to have made this world-shaking discovery. But they won't tell anyone else where they discovered it, something which might permit others to examine the discovery in situ and determine the validity of their work.

Sounds like the groundwork for a hoax to me.

Me too.

Without knowing exactly where the item was found (if it was actually found and not manufactured by the 'finders'), the 'finders' claims can not be verified; and without verification, the claims of the 'finders' are suspicious, at best. At worst, this is an outright hoax - keep in mind that the Greek government is in a severe financial bind, and even researchers might be desperate for money.

By the way, did anyone else notice that date when this alleged 'find' was announced?

That's right, boys and girls: 1 April 2013
