I don't think it does; he thinks it does need to be unlocked.

We're both currently on Vodafone. He has a 24 month contract (but can renew it 60 days before the contract ends) and has a HTC Desire S. I'm on sim only.

I've had a lot of problems with my phone and have had a lot of issues with the customer service from Vodafone. :x They don't stock the battery for my phone; but had claimed to have ordered one for me. I found out via Twitter that they don't stock this battery. They then refused to repair it because it's probably out of warranty. The phone was released in April last year and I asked in February for it to be looked at and repaired. They finally agreed to look at it. Except, they couldn't have done - still having the same problem. :x I've had 2 batteries (they gave me one from their display model) and have had problems with both batteries.

Dad said that if I want to, I can have his phone. I've looked into what other networks offer and have found a good deal (PAYG) on Orange. Dad thinks that I'll have to get his phone unlocked for my sim to work in his phone. Is that right? I didn't think if you had a contract, the phone was actually locked to that network. Well, I know my old Nokia was - it does say "Vodafone" on the front of the phone.

I do not believe locking is determined by whether or not there is a contract. Locking is in place when a device is branded for a certain network, and that will have to be removed in order for the device to work on another network.

The phone will almost certainly be locked. There are plenty of places doing phone unlocking for a few quid though.

If you feel up to unlocking your phone on your own do a Google search on XDA Developers. It's a phone geek forum.
