Hi. I want an anti virus app for the ipad. I keep getting directed to the app store and plagued with adverts. I think I have an infection.

I want the best free one, thanks.

It is not a virus. The iPad in question has not yet been "jailbroke". An iPad's OS will automatically divert purchases to the App Store, even if the App Store does not stock the item.

The OP needs to "jailbreak" his iPad, not invest in anti-virus software ... which he could only get from the App Store anyway ...

Ads are the business model for most of free apps; consider alternatives based on reviews or purchasing the premium version of the app (which is mostly ad-free) to remove ad-banners.
If your iPad is running the last version of iOS, you can enable the in-built Adblocker in Safari > Content Blockers menu. It doesn't remove the iAd ads though.

Jailbreaking is a double-edged sword; you can block ads by installing a Hosts file (there are probably some tools for that on Cydia), but you can also install involuntarily real malwares from untrusted sources that can spy on you or steal your credit card number. And Jailbreaking goes away after each iOS update. I'd stay away from it if I were you.

AVG might be for iPad but I'm not sure. That's the antivirus I use on my comp & they have apps for different mobile devices.

Again, what MegaBass describes is not a virus. It is an inherent feature of iOS to divert any attempt to obtain an app for the iPad to the iPad App Store, unless the iPad has been put through a "jailbreak" procedure.

Of course "jail breaking" an iPad may end up making the iPad vulnerable to virii anyway, so he would be back where he started - unwanted behavior from his iPad.

...

As a side note, MegaBass has not logged in for a week, and he may not log in for a long time, if ever.

iPads don't get viruses unless you jailbreak it. What you're experiencing is essentially like a popup advertisement so I suggest installing a content blocker from the App Store (you need to have iOS 9 or later installed); it will block the majority of advertisements and should eliminate the problem. Since installing one, I've never had that issue again.
