Microsoft constantly prompting my to upgrade to Win8.1 i'm little afraid i have Windows 8 since i bought it and installed it in November 2012.

I'm thinking about downloading Win 8.1 but i'm little afraid that i lost my file.

Your question is unclear.

Are you saying that you downloaded the 8.1 install, but can't find it and therefore can't upgrade?

Are you saying that you already upgraded to 8.1, but the OS doesn't recognize it (or keeps prompting in spite of showing you having 8.1) and you can't reinstall or correct?

If you have not installed 8.1 but can't find the upgrade file, contact Microsoft and see what they say. If you need a key to download and already have done so, they can issue a new key for a new download...so long as they can remote in and see that you indeed have not already upgraded.

If you did install but keep getting bugged, report it to Microsoft. There may be a step not yet done, or maybe it's a bug in the OS they need to do a patch to correct.

If you are upgrading to 8.1 from 8, you should not lose your files, settings or most programs. Your Windows Store apps will need to be reinstalled though.

However, it is always a good idea to back up your files, especially when doing something like an upgrade. Just in case.

You need do good preparation before upgrading system to Windows 8.1. Then there will be no data loss. I did not know this before I upgraded my XP to 8.1, I then lost files. To rescure them, I got Windows Boot Genius to help me at last!

It depends on what you're upgrading from. From Windows 8, you lose very little, but from XP you lose quite a bit.

Concerning programs on your computer there is a compatibility checker Windows offers. You might want to use that too.
