Anyone do much gaming from within Linux or Mac OS? Does anyone use Cedega in Linux or play PC games on Mac via Virtual PC? If so, what kind of games? Do you notice a big performance hit?

As a future Mac owner, I want to know this myself.

As someone considering getting a Mac, I'm interested in knowing also.

I'm thinking you can use bootcamp in any situation where performance on OSX doesn't suit you. I've done some Linux gaming on native ports though and it's usually better than Windows just because there isn't quite so much background crap going on.

Something I noticed on native Linux ports (I think it was Enemy Territory and Doom 3 demo) was that I couldn't "Alt-Tab" (can't remember Linux method now) back to desktop like in XP.
Is that a typical thing? I tend to use KDE.

I just hope Leopard and Vista play nicely together and that MS hasn't done something to try and cripple dual-booting.

Cool things like what? Repeatedly hit bill gates over the head?

But on a serious note, just wait till Leopard (next version of Mac OS X) comes out in a few months because it's going to wipe the floor with Vista. In fact, Vista can barely keep up with Tiger. Also, have you seen the prices of Vista?

I think you can get Civilization 4 for it too, which is good news for me.

Checkout Transgaming's Cedega technology, it's kind of like an emulator allowing you to play
Windows games from within Linux.

It's supposed to have improved a lot since this review....

If gaming is your poison and you need a stable system then FreeBSD is your best shot, if you have a great deal of computer skills that is. It can run games if you run the gauntlet getting them to run. It cannot Bootcamp but you really don't need it.

I play Guild Wars and the occasional Civ IV through cedega under Kubuntu linux. Works great, though DirectX 9 support isn't quite there yet. So can't really do the spectral lighting postprocessing effects. If you play oblivion you'll have to play it using oldblivion.

Why FreeBSD and what do you mean by running the gauntlet? :)
