Any FreeBSD users here? I'm looking into it, and I wanted to get some information. I've been using Linux (openSUSE) for a while, but it's been really limited about supporting my graphics cards. Any ideas? Would FreeBSD work better? Or maybe should I try a different Linux?

..... :o FreeBSD takes ages to install. I wouldn't recommend iyt unless you were genuinely going to use it for something important. Why do you want to use it?

FreeBSD is only an option if you really know a lot about computers but it's a great system if you do. With a little work FreeBSD does everything Windows does better.

OSX runs on Darwin, which is based on FreeBSD.

I especially love the way you can easily manipulate processes running through the CPU in all UNIX-based OS'. Do any of ye run a computer with Windows and Unix concurrently? Is this possible through a partition?

I'd reccommend you try the BSDeviant Live Boot CD, if it wasn't for the fact that Paul Russo pulled the site down again. Read about the project here, though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BSDeviant

Further searching indicates a torrent of BSDeviant is available here:

http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3345841/BSDeviant

Be forewarned however, that it uses a version of Opera that was available before Opera became freeware. The version included with BSDeviant flashes adverts. There was talk about a future version of BSDeviant using Firefox, however I think a new version of BSDeviant will be available RSN.

BSD is also what the Mac OS X operating is based on. I don't know what variant, specifically.

I have been using FreeBSD as my primary OS for about five years and it has yet to let me down. If you do decide you want to install it I would suggest reading the handbook located at: http://www.freebsd.org/handbook

If you aren't ready to dedicate a system to freebsd you can always "rent" a shell from http://www.polarhome.com A shell is a server running a specific OS which allows you to login to your own account via SSH (Secure SHell) and run programs, compile source code and learn the OS, only drawback is that you can't configure a shell account like you would configure a system you actually own.

What graphics card are you running?
