Although I never planned it this way, I am currently using a desktop computer that I bought from a "screwdriver shop" ten years ago this coming February. Although I am using a substantially newer monitor (less than 3 years old).

I also have a 2007 vintage Dell laptop that had been my son's in undergraduate school (especially useful because it has a paid-for copy of Microsoft Office) but the fan seems to have seized up and I can't use it (wondering if it is possible to fix).

I have told myself I'll get a new laptop when I need one for work. Currently I am restricted to working on client hardware and the sort of laptop I want will set me back more than US$1000. I don't want to spend that kind of money if I don't have an immediate need for that much horsepower.

<--- Panasonic Toughbook CF-T8 Mk2 (U Series intel 1.6 Ghz 64 bit Dual Core CPU) from @ 2010, The HDD in it is a 1TB drive purchased back in October.

The Computer is essentially a less robust version of the CF-30 Mk3 that is in use by a lot of Public Saftey, Game Wardens and the like.

<--- MSI All in One Wind Top AE2420 3D. It's about 4 years old. About a year ago I changed the HDD to an SSD and changed over from Windows 7 to 8. The only problem I have with the computer is, on bootup, the GPU fan hyperspins for about 5 minutes then goes back to normal.

I built mine about a year and a half ago, but the components are older than that, probably up to 3 years old.

2008 HP DC7800p 2.33ghz Core 2 Duo, 3.5gb RAM, 500gb HDD. Pirated Windows 8 pro.

People have suggested I upgrade, but I love this little computer, for music, and movies, light weight gaming, and web browsing, this computer, is perfect, and I rarely have any issues with it.

2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
6 GB 677 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
240 GB Solid State Drive

I could just as easily post on my 2003 1.8 GHz G5 Power Mac

A 10 year old Compaq EVO W4000. I love this machine; it has been solid as a rock for years.

But alas, the IDE bus is making it increasingly difficult to maintain and upgrade.

Seriously considering one of the new Mac Pro's. For imaging and sound work I do need horsepower, and I dislike introducing new gear so much that, when I must do so, I like to buy big and future-proof as much as possible. And my tolerance for Windows' peculiarities seems to be waning. My MacBook Pro has spoiled me in that way.

Dell Inspiron 15R SE, from july 2013. Bang for the bucks, given that it was the only laptop in it's price range with an i7, hybrid drive and a dual GPU.

I'm using a 2010 model Alienware laptop with 6GB of ram, a 2.53GHz Core i5 dual core with hyperthreading, and a single Mobility Radeon HD 5870 video card. My dad originally bought it for $2500, but I don't think he really got his money's worth. He kept it for two years, and let me have it when it started slowing down on him. It turns out the fans were all clogged with dust and there were a bunch of unnecessary apps installed, so after I got all that taken care of it started running fine again. For a supposed "gaming" laptop though, it actually performs worse than the desktop I built for $500 a year and a half before. :P
