So I debated where to post this Article because although the company developing this technology is primarily doing it as a game engine. I feel it has much more broader applications in Education, Science and Technology.
Here is the Article: Outerra

Here is where you can Download the Demo: Outerra

Here is a couple of YouTube movies for Outerra:

A warning if you download the Demo you may waist a few hours and quite a bit of hard drive space exploring what this technology has to offer. Something about it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. The views can be quite stunning. The potential for this technology is mind blowing! I had to share. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

3D planetary engine for seamless planet rendering from space down to the surface. Can use arbitrary resolution of elevation data, refining it to centimeter resolution using fractal algorithms.

Unlimited visibility, progressive download of data, procedural content generation.

Integrated vehicle and aircraft physics engines. Embedded web browser for web service integration and more.

The current Demo uses Google maps to render the Earth. You can download the Demo and explore anywhere on the earth. It was originally meant to be a game engine. I think the potential goes way beyond games. I guess I'm just excited about the potential uses of this thing and, wanted to share. I think it's worth a download of the Demo just to explore the regions of our Earth. Last night I made a pretty epic journey from So Cal all the way up the west coast to Alaska. There just so much to explore!

The possibilities for this are endless! Everything from playing Grand Theft Auto in your home town to exploring the Mojave from the comfort of your couch.
