Theoretically, yes it is. We still have to develop a viable material strong enough to withstand the forces though.

Actually carbon nanotubes are strong enough to make the cable. The problem is. They are still trying to figure out how to mass produce them.

*As far as I know*, the longest carbon nanotube constructed to date is less than a foot, and no one has figured out how to make much more than disjoined powders of the nanotubes yet. And we certainly don't have the capability to make one that stretches thousands of miles into space!
