Hi. Probably won't be around for a while now. This causes me no small degree of embarrassment, but...

In a fit of temper I whacked the screen of my iMac. It looks as though I have damaged the screen, though the commands and stuff seem to work OK. I've fiddled with settings, to no avail. Is there any way I can get it repaired or is it irrepairable?

Cheers.

Take it to an Apple shop I suppose, or get an external screen. The latter option is probably cheaper.

Well, when I say 'whacked' I didn't. I'd been on a beer and banged the screen down - not really hard, but enough to damage some of the screen's delicate layers. You live and learn, I suppose.

I have an external screen I could use already but I need to get a lead for the other monitor to test it on. I have an LCD TV screen by its side, you see.

Anyone have any ideas which one I need to pick up on that score?

I feel your pain I dropped my external floppy drive on my laptop over ten years ago and it never worked again. Plus I step on it more than ounce and broke the plastic on it.
The whole laptop is now completely dead.

I hope that you get it fixed, soon.

yes there is. Its the same way you would replace a laptop's screen. I saw this in a issue of computer shopper. Their site is computershopper.com.
oh and i just found the how-to in their database:
How-To Replace a Laptop Screen

this should work, cause its a lcd in the imac and thats what laptops have

I hate to double post but, if its really old, i would probally just buy a new one. Those screens cost around $200+ (used)

I have heard of LCD's occasionly fixing themsleves when left to discharge. Try unplugging the battery and leaving it for a day - it probably won't do anything, but theres no harm in trying

The battery? It's an iMac, not one of them Book ones.
