I used to hack minorly when I was younger, but that was easy stuff like school networks.

I'm wondering if anyone could tell me more about what sorts of techniques people use for internet hacking? I'm not talking about mass operations here, but more likely getting into directories on websites etc...?

I was banned for writing a notice in my school user area saying that I would hack into the network if the technician didn't go away. I kinda tried to do that, very clumsily, just trying to alter my privileges in areas I wasn't supposed to be in and ended up embarrassed in another class because everyone found out I had been blocked for "attempting to hack into the system". I was feeling insane at the time.

Hacking is fun. I do it on a regular basis at work, where I'm a systems support associate. :D

I'm not sure, but I think hacking is illegal. I would lock this thread, but I can't find in the rules where discussing how to engage in illegal activities is prohibited.

If I knew how, I would.

mostly to sites that require you to pay to use the site.

I am still pretty basic at this but here are some tips for basic hacking:
 View the source to look for links
 Examine forms to look for vulnerabilities
 Download and decompile all java .class and .jar programs that might be important ( A login program may include encryption algorithms to reverse or brute-force, or even UNENCRYPTED PASSWORDS!)
 Pay attention to all folders in links.
 Remember: All server-side scripts(.php, .pl) have complete access on the victim computer.
 Check important directories such as /cgi-bin, they may be open

Good tips. some more:

 read up on security mailing lists
 look for sql injection vulnerabilities
 see if you can do cross site scripting

Thanks - this is all very useful. I'm not planning to do anything illegal. I just like knowledge.

Well, in the United States: it is breaking a federal law, so I try to stay away from that stuff!

Yeah. I don't quite get why people feel there should be some double standard on the internet. Breaking into someone else's house, even if you don't break anything, is still illegal. Why should it be okay that one does the same thing logically instead of physically?
