I want to buy a new computer this year, what are my choices. I actually want to install the "retro" Windows XP operating system and dual boot Windows 98 (again, retro). Security isn't a major issue for me, even if I plan to use the internet with it. My dad never upgraded his computer from XP, but his is still relatively safe. I also want it to be able to handle the original Sims and Rollercoaster Tycoon games, and a few other games I am too lazy to name.

If you are going to use it for old Windows OSs, then go buy a cheap PC from Walmart for a few hundred.

Or you could wait a few weeks to see when Windows 10 comes out and buy a decent PC.
Then download virtual machine (or what ever they call it now days) to run Windows 98 fully within a window.

You can run Windows XP and older software via built in software into Windows Vista, 7 and 8.1 (current Windows).

I forgot about that when I was posting, too. Aren't virtual machines reliant on high performance host machines though?

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... -windows-7

I meant using Microsoft's Windows Virtual PC.

Here are the minimum requirements:
Computer running Windows 7 (all editions except Starter)
1+ GHz processor (32- or 64-bit)
1.25 GB memory required, 2 GB recommended
Additional 15 GB of hard disk space per virtual Windows environment recommended
Optional: if the processor supports hardware-assisted virtualization technology such as AMD-V or Intel-VT, it will be used. Before March 19, 2010, such a processor was mandatory.

XP mode as M$ calls it requires Pro or "Ultimate" Windows variants. I'd say you're better off just running 7, it's no Vista but XP is well known to waste graphics resources. You can save a little VRAM by installing this updated GUI if it really must be XP.

I'd say it's a safe bet you could also run everything you want in Linux & WineTools. There are other Windows runtimes for *nix systems if that doesn't work anyway.

edit: sorry, linkifier seems to be broken.

XP mode has issues running graphically intensive programs, especially games.

K_Kelly wants to run the full XP for some reason.

Ok, I was wrong, you cannot run Windows 98 in Windows Virtual PC post 2007.

What is your budget?

Your question is easier to answer if we know what kinda coin your talking.

ReactOS would probably fit the bill better than anything we've discussed yet...
