I've already taken my laptop to Best Buy (using my roommate's computer now), but I wanted to ask: what could cause this? The last thing that happened before I lost the cursor was yet another Windows 8.1 "update" - could that disable the keyboard and mousepad?

Glad I have GeekSquad coverage....

it has been my experience that the automated windows updates can sometimes mess with the registry somehow. I lost my TCP/IP one time until I hit the windows restore to get it back. then I turned off the updates for a while.
