I've been building my own computers since 1996. I used to have a lot more parts than I have now... I threw away about 10 hard drives, 3 computer cases, 3 broken monitors, and a bunch of modems a couple years ago when I moved into my apartment. Right now I just have enough parts for the 2 desktops and 1 laptop that I use regularly, and one extra case and a broken power supply I've been meaning to throw out.

I certainly used to. It wasn't uncommon for me to have enough parts lying around to build one or two systems, but after years of rarely using them and the parts becoming obsolete and me now making enough money that I can buy parts easily, I throw out anything that isn't valuable or up to date. I actually throw out most everything that I don't use at least monthly, so that my house is now half empty.

I used to collect spare parts to build/rebuild machines for family members, as I'm the one guy in my entire extended family that knows computers.

Since gaining access to reliable funding, I've stopped collecting and started getting rid of spare parts that were rather useless.

Nowadays, the parts I gather are from machines that I've retired that are still useful (a CPU here, some RAM there).

I collect computer parts (and old machines!)

I've got a few older Apple II's, C64s, Macintosh Classic,
IBM AT/XT and clones

Plus some newer parts (spares); parts taken out of upgraded systems that are typically chucked out in the dumpster at work.

Yeah I have lots of obsolete computer hard ware. Example of something I have is a fairly new(unused) 17" monitor that some one cut the cord on. So one day(never) I will put a new plug on it and have another monitor.

Mac Plus, had a Mac Classic, old PC parts, like SIMM RAM, a hard drive, an old monitor, a cannibalized Celeron PC, and an old 60mhz Pentium PC are some of the parts I have.

I've cleaned out alot...I'm down to about 3 towers, 1 monitor and a printer sitting in the basement...and one of those huge rubbermaid bins full of cards, cables and stuff. Oh...some cables stuffed under the bed in a box, along with two ancient "comcrap" laptops...another older laptop in the closet.

I have a AMD Athalon 64 3200+ lying in a box on my floor from when I upgraded my computer.

An old laptop with a broken screen hooked up to my TV.

Some random PCI cards, cables, and some broken old hard drives.

I have several motherboards and cards for 486s that were brand new and unused by the university. I also have nearly a dozen hard drives with less than 1GB storage and several 1-4x CD drives. I have several computers from 1999 and 2000 that people get rid of. I have enough old computer parts to fill several plastic tubs. I've thrown away a lot more. I didn't have any use for a computer that was built into a desk frame and ran on two 6" floppy drives, or another computer that takes up several square feet of space and weighs 30lbs, or half a dozen 286s.

I end up gathering computer parts, most of them are used to build working systems, though I have some loose hard disks and CD ROM drives in a box under my bed, plus a loose modem and parallel port card which were both pulled from my server as they were obsolete in there
