Look for these parts at www.newegg.com

First you want an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2 Ghz or higher. Ghz represents the speed, but not always. For example, a Pentium 4 solo processor at 3.2 Ghz is slower than a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo.

Next, get a motherboard for the Core 2 processor. There are really specific ones that need to be used, but I'm not sure which one. Look on www.newegg.com for these motherboards.

Get a video card THAT IS NOT AN INTEL!! ! Intel cards suck. End of Story. Anyways get a ATI or Nvidea video card with 256 MB of memory. this is excellent for graphics. If the cards are too expensive, get a 128 MB one. Again, no Intel.

Hard Drives should be in the 100-250 GB range.

The flash memory should be 1 GB.

Sound cards don't really matter unless your card is REALLY out of date.

That's about it.

Hows this?:

E4300 Allendale (great OCer,it can easily go to 3.6GHz)
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (good OCing mobo)
$200 dx 10 card once they come out.
2GB DDR2 800 Corsair RAM.

O.o

That's.... Woah, dude, you can really afford that? Wow. Definite yes if you can afford it.

You mean by Dx 10 by Direct X 10? I'm assuming you are most likely getting Vista.

Or you can get a Mac Pro. Os is better than Windows, But it is a run for your budget (try $2000).

Can't afford that? Try a regular iMac. Or you could stick Windows, I don't care. Macs are a bit more expensive though.

I'm try to build a cheap gaming computer thats as high-end as possible,i'll get two 160 gig hard drives and dual-boot XP and vista, macs aren't made for gaming so i won't get a mac, they're overpriced anyway, and there hardware isn't that good (the video cards, not the RAM or core 2 duos)

So you're testing Windows Vista?

Also, the Macs can run Windows.

St33med: you know, Intel does not currently make any graphics cards. I think that you mean that intel grapihcs are bad, as they have not made an acutal graphics card for quite a few years. They're working on one, but currently, there are no Intel graphics cards up for sale.

Also, why are you promoting mac computers? For the same performance, they cost a lot more. Unless you have money to burn, getting a mac as a gaming computer is pointless. Not only will most games(and other programs) not work(unless you also spend money to buy Windows, which wouldn't make much sense), but you're paying so much more for it. Even if some programs do have a "mac" edition, it usually costs more, and is unlikely to be found on sale for discounted prices. So, not only do you waste more money to begin with, you waste more money in the long run.

Unknown: if you name your computer budget, I can spec out a computer for you, with a price list for each component and websites where you can get the items for the prices I quote. I'm always watching computer component sales, and I enjoy helping people get the best prices. I've been doing this for years, and you can definately save a lot of money by building your own computer rather than getting one from a retailer/manufacturer. Also, don't get everything from newegg. They do have some good prices, but there are other sites that frequently have sales which can reduce item prices to far less than those on newegg.com. Also, for larger items(like cases), their shipping fees can get somewhat expensive. Some other sites(like SuperGoodDeal.com) offer free shipping on many items, including computer cases. Let me know what price range you want and I'd be happy to help you out. :)

like what?
i have been using computers for 12 years and i have never had a problem with backwards compatibility with windows any windows OS
as a matter of fact i have got sam and max(an old 16-bit game) and rollercoaster tycoon(a direct 7/8 game) working on vista. and yes i have seen the forums of people posting "my games doesn't work in vista whaa whaa whaa" and frankly they are people who think that are good with computers but are about as computer illiterate as you.

btw if anyone here is a newb it's YOU since you are the one is asking for help on building a new system which is something i mastered when i was 6.

I know a lot about building computers. I know enough to say that you are better off with a console. (like the Wii, or PS3, I cannot endorse the XBOX360 as M$ has some horrible prejudice against mice and keyboards in FPS games)
